These are ten strategies, suggested by KIPO, for how to manage patents and cope with patent debates:

-Keep up to date with trends in your own products.
-Take an action against reckless patent lawsuits filed by competitors
-Applying for a patent is prior to launching a product.
-There is no such thing as world effective patent.
-Keep deadline of patent applications in foreign countries.
-Buying patent rights could be a way.
-Make it clear that who is responsible for patent debates in case of OEM products.
-Keep staffs in core technology safe no matter what happens.
-Do not reveal everything about your technology at the stage of negotiation.
-Protect your technology not by trade secrets but by patents.

KIPO has performed a synthetical analysis about actual cases over patent conflicts and got the ten strategies out of them especially for SMEs.

"As we can see from the PDP patent debate between Korea and Japan, and the patent lawsuits against Korean SMEs in MP3 player and cell-phone industries, Korean SMEs as well as major companies are exposed to patent attacks by foreign companies. That is why effective dealing with the attacks is highly required. We believe that the strategies we have come up with will be very useful for those SMEs who have difficulties in managing patents due to lack of money and personnels in charge of intellectual property rights," said KIPO.
